Data Structure Visualizations

Update: David Galles (the author of the tool mentioned in this post) just told me a good news that he just rolled out the new HTML5 version of his awesome tool. Now you can enjoy cool animations right from your browser without the hassle of downloading the whole program. I tried it and it worked like a charm. Click here to try it yourself. Thanks David Galles ! :)

This article made it to the homepage of  Hacker News,  popular bookmarks of Delicious and top posts of the day of WordPress. I’d like to say thanks for all readers for your enormous interest in such a simple post. :)

I always think the best way to understand complex data structures & algorithm is to see them in action. So I want to share with you an awesome data structure visualization tools written in Java by David Galles.

This tool is a comprehensive collection of common data structures and algorithms.  So just in case you lose your CS textbook and want to brush up your algorithm-fu for the upcoming software engineer interview, you may find this tool helpful.

You can check out some screenshoots of the program below; then download the its java version by click on this link : Data Structure Visualizations.

Hey.. Excellent app.. Thanks a lot for sharing this! Its a must for teaching data structures to students without any prior knowledge…

Data structure is very complex in C b’coz we have to use pointer which is very difficult to understand. If you study only theoretical in that if you don’t have visualization that become much more complex than having. In visualization we can understand and analyze the things thoroughly. This is good stuff to help the student.

Not gonna lie, it’s pretty sick. Have always been thinking about making an app like this.

  6. Thanks for the link! We’ve just put up a javascript version of these visualizations, with key features (like undo), under the same website
(http://www.cs.usfca.edu/~galles/visualization/) that should run in any browser. There is also a flash version that contains one or two algorithms (red/black trees) that have not yet made their way to the javascript version. The new version has been written to be easily extended, look for tutorials and code examples soon. The java versions are still around for those who want them. Apologies if the new rollout breaks any links, I’ve tried to keep symbolic links from older sites, but sometimes things break …

    • Hi David,
      Thanks for the good news.
Your program is really awesome. I’ve tried a lot of algorithm visualization tools in the past. Most of them are either not comprehensive or very hard to use. Yours is simply the best.
      Keep up the good work!

  7. excellent application man it make quite easy to understand complex sorting algorithm but I seen only few of written concept covered in flash version i.e. only sorting and not others like graph traversals , am I missing anything ?

  14. A very nice app; specially the graph algorithms.

I’ve also put up some Visualizations to assist in teaching an introductory programming or data structures course : http://www.thelearningpoint.net/computer-science

knew where I could find a captcha plugin for my comment form?
I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having problems finding one?
    Thanks a lot!
